The short answer
Choose one travel anchor. Add another product only when it solves a problem the first one does not.
The scenario: £30,000 annual spending and regular trips
Consider a traveller making repeated trips who can use lounges, but still needs to check long stays, business travel and medical conditions. £30,000 is a hypothetical annual eligible-spend figure; it does not prove that any premium card is worthwhile or that you meet its eligibility.
The travel anchor: Platinum OR Ultra
Investigate Amex Platinum when its lounge, insurance and dining mix fits your trips; its annual fee is £650. Investigate Revolut Ultra when its advertised unlimited lounge access, connectivity and partner subscriptions fit better. Confirm Ultra’s UK checkout fee and the relevant travel and guest conditions.
Do not automatically hold both. Compare the additional usable lounge access and subscription replacement value against the second fee. Similar insurance and lounge benefits can have low incremental value.
The backup: payment acceptance and foreign use
A traveller can need a payment alternative when their main card is not accepted or its foreign-use charges are unattractive. Compare a suitable no-annual-fee option, checking charges for card spending, cash withdrawals and weekends rather than assuming every foreign transaction is free.
If airline points are a genuine goal, also compare an airline-linked card such as British Airways Premium Plus. Only add it after checking current earning rules, voucher conditions, taxes and reward-seat availability. We have not calculated an award return for this scenario.
Stress-test the portfolio
Write down usable lounge people-visits, trips outside standard insurance conditions, subscriptions replaced and current foreign-payment costs. Test one travel anchor plus a practical backup first.
Use the £30,000 input in Perkfolio only for spending you can realistically put through the product. Treat point values as estimates, exclude duplicated perks and test the recurring-year result without welcome bonuses. Pay credit balances in full; interest can outweigh reward value.
